At the beginning of the 1900s, Picton played host to one of the century’s greatest writers, Katherine Mansfield. Her short stories are legendary for their elegant rendering of the upper crust of colonial-era New Zealand society, and like those of Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë before her, her stories delicately depict the splendid finery with which her society surrounded itself. Ms. Mansfield sadly never stayed in our Formal Suite, but we’re certain that, if she had, the room would have merited a mention in her writings.
The Victorian-inspired décor features an exquisitely crafted king-sized bed, an ornate, filigreed full-length triptych mirror, crystal chandeliers of tasteful design in both the bedroom and bathroom, polished Monterey cypress floorboards, and a classic, freestanding French slipper tub, set in its rightful place: directly in the middle of the bathroom. For guests with places to be, the bathroom also features a spacious, modern shower.
The Formal Suite provides guests with a rare opportunity to glimpse what luxury used to be; luxury before it became gauche and showy. Luxury as it ought to be: meticulously crafted furniture, modest, beautiful décor, remarkable food and wine, and breathtaking natural beauty on all sides.
The nightly room rate of $450 includes a gourmet breakfast, as well as a complimentary glass of champagne and fruit platter upon arrival. Parking is of course free for guests, as is the hotel’s wireless internet.
It is the blessing of an island’s people, to be surrounded not only by the sea itself, but also by images of it. All New Zealanders count among their cherished childhood memories their vacations at the seaside. Whether it be pulling up crayfish pots in Kaikoura, collecting oysters at Bluff, or picnicking at Port Chalmers, everybody here remembers the moment they fell in love with the sea. For those raised on the South Island, Picton and the Marlborough Sounds always represented a kind of seaside mecca, to which families would annually make the pilgrimage. The sea here has a particular kind of tranquillity and humility to it, an almost magical way of making concerns and worries melt into oblivion.
We believe our Sea Room does the same, albeit only for two people at a time.
The grand bay window takes pride of place in the bedroom, inviting guests to sit and take in Picton’s charm from the room’s cozy confines. Classic bespoke furniture adorns the suite, lending it a sense of timeless grace unmatched by other hotels in the region. Of an evening, a candlelit bath in a classic French tub (alongside a glass of local pinot, perhaps) may provide the perfect follow up to the delectable meals served at the award-winning restaurant next door.
